Autumn colour edit: chocolate & sage

The two shades doing all the work this autumn — and why they’re even better worn together than apart.

Autumn colour edit: chocolate & sage

Every autumn has its colours. This one belongs to chocolate — deep, edible browns from espresso to bitter cocoa — and sage, the dusty, greyed green that’s quietly become a neutral. Apart, they each do a job. Together, they’re the most flattering palette of the season.

Why chocolate beats black this autumn

Black is easy, but brown is interesting. A chocolate slip, knit or maxi has all of black’s slimming, go-with-anything ease with twice the warmth against your skin — and it makes gold jewellery, tan leather and a bronzed makeup look sing. It’s the rare ‘rich’ colour that still reads low-effort.

Sage: the green that acts like a neutral

Sage is so muted it behaves like grey — you can wear it with denim, with cream, with black, with more green. It’s soft on every complexion, it photographs calm rather than loud, and it’s the easiest way to add colour to an autumn wardrobe without committing to colour-colour.

Now wear them together

Here’s the move: chocolate and sage are a tonal match made for each other. Both are earthy, both are slightly greyed, neither shouts. A sage top with chocolate trousers, or a chocolate knit over an olive skirt, looks expensive precisely because it’s subtle. Add a tan shoe and a gold hoop and you’ve got a complete autumn uniform from three colours that all live in the same warm corner of the wheel.

Colour is what pettl was built for. Pick chocolate or sage and search it straight across every store — the colour-wheel finds the exact shade, so your tonal outfit actually tones.
